During a national celebration known as Read Across America, Peake put literacy center-stage with a spirit week. Each day was dedicated to a beloved children’s book. Our children were engaged in literacy activities related to the book while wearing their themed costumes.
The week kicked off with Pajama Day, inspired by Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney, followed by Silly Socks Day, featuring Dr. Seuss’ Fox in Socks. Both days, children curled up with books in cozy spaces throughout the school. Early literacy skills such as recognizing letters and print awareness help lay the groundwork for reading and writing success.
Wednesday was all about bright colors and patterns, just like The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle. The children incorporated the colorful theme into their artwork that day. Handling tools like crayons and paint brushes builds fine motor skills which is critical for writing readiness.
On Thursday, inspired by Caps For Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina, our preschoolers explored the playful tale of a cap peddler and his mischievous monkeys. We reveled in the joy of storytelling and practiced sequencing story events while wearing hats of all shapes and sizes.
The grand finale on Friday was our Vocabulary Parade, where our students brought their literacy learning to life. Dressed as their favorite vocabulary words, they paraded through our preschool, sharing their chosen word and its meaning. From “hatch” to “delivery,” creativity and learning were on full display as children expanded their vocabularies.
At Peake, we believe in fostering a love for reading and language from an early age. These early literacy skills will prepare our children for success in kindergarten and beyond.
